Getting to Know...
...Larry Williams
I was born in West Virginia but grew up in Elyria, Ohio. While in high school, I played trombone in the band and orchestra and for a local church’s weekly radio broadcast.
I graduated with degrees from Bowling Green University in mathematics (minor in physics). While there, I played in the symphonic band and served as drum major of the marching band for four years.
After graduating from college I taught mathematics at Findlay University in Ohio and completed my career as a professor of mathematics for 37 years at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan.
I put the horn down for 15 years while starting my career and family. When I started playing again it was with the College Wind Ensemble as principle trombone, with a couple local symphonies, and with a brass quintet doing weddings and the typical church holiday circuit. In other words, I played a lot of straight and classical music.
Then, about three years before I retired, we formed the GIG Band at my church playing big band arrangements of gospel tunes. I finally got to play some music that swings and I really enjoyed it.
My wife, Jeanne, and I have been coming to the Hilton Head area since 1992 and have always planned to retire to the area. What a surprise to find such a great musical destination. I feel really fortunate to have met so many excellent musicians and to have the opportunity to play with the Royal Garden Dixie Land Band and The Stardust Orchestra. I’m playing music that swings and I am learning more everyweek..
Jeanne and I between us have five adult children and four grandsons. Jeanne still works as a registered nurse and I tutor local students in mathematics. We have been living in the Hilton Head area since 2006 and are very glad to be here.
