.

We welcomed back the Hilton Head Island High School’s Band Director, T.J. Shank, who joined in the last set.

The  DJSLC Annual Meeting was called to order  by President Alan Waitley at 3:24. Alan presented twelve Dixieland chart books to T.J. Shank and we anticipate that some students will attend a
Sunday Jam sometime in the future.

The Board recently contributed $1000 to The Jazz Corner’s Junior Jazz Foundation. The following paragraph was included in the response from TJC:  “Due to the caring generosity of donors and supporters such as yourselves,  the Jr. Jazz Foundation this year was able to fund several projects for students including tuition to attend summer jazz camp, instrument donations to schools and music students in need, free master classes, a jazz lunch & learn program for elementary school students, a college scholarship for jazz studies, participation with SC-ETV in the development of knowitall.org, a music and arts learning website for children, and a music/arts teaching workshop at the Columbia Museum of Art.”

At our August Jam, we collected $143 in the Tip Jar and distributed it to Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund of The American Red Cross.  The meeting was adjourned at 3:29.

The Hilton Head Island High School Marching Band recently WON first place overall in its division at the Walerboro Band Classic last month.  The students were so used to finishing near the bottom, that they were overwhelmed and thrilled.   Awards also were presented for the best drum major, best horn line, and best drum line.  T.J. Shank attributes the band’s success to increased enthusiasm and hard work.  Congratulations, one and all!
